When I tell people that I grew up in New York, most of the time they assume I’m talking about either New York City or somewhere upstate. Rarely does anyone ever mention Long Island, and when I do bring it up, I’m not sure most people even know the place exists. It’s for that reason I’ve always felt that Long Island has some manner of unknown and forgotten innocence to it. No matter how hectic or dull life gets living in New York City, I can always run away to Long Island to recharge and relax.
As a side note, I also think its important to get out of the city from time to time regardless. See old friends and have a house party. Escape the mugginess of the city in the summer for the pools of the North Shore or the beaches of the South Shore. Even in the winter, the lush greenhouses of the old Gatsby-era estates offer a warm reprieve from the wind and snow swept avenues of Manhattan. No matter the situation or the time of year, my friends always manage to delight and entertain.
